BACKGROUND

The role of education in facilitating social and economic progress has long been recognized. Technical skills and knowledge are one of the important drivers for economic growth and social development of any country, countries with higher availability of skilled labor force respond more effectively and promptly to both challenges and opportunities of globalization.Afghanistanis in transition phase of building its economy and society. The success will be determined by the abilities of its people, to create, share and use skills and knowledge more effectively and productively. The transition will requireAfghanistanto develop its workers into specialized, skilled labor force who will be able to meet current development demands of the country.

While the youth population is fast shrinking with higher dependency ratios in the developed world, as per United Nation’s (National Joint Youth Program) report released in 2007 Afghanistan is blessed with the population of above 68 percent below the age of 25 years. However,Afghanistan is not in a position of leverage its demographic dividend as there is a drastic shortage of skilled labor force. Thus, there is a dire need to transform current human resources that primarily unskilled and less productive into professional and productive labor workforce preferably having international standard competencies. This will be possible by extending opportunities for quality technical education to youth of the country.

Afghanistan Institute for technology (AIT) was established in 1951, by the government ofAfghanistanthrough technical support from the United States of America (USA). Since then, hundreds of students have received quality technical education which was adequately complemented training materials and technical expertise from its affiliate universities in theUnited States.

Students have been imparted education in Machine tools technology, Auto repairing, building construction and sheet metal work, electricity, civil aviation and cartography.

AIT was affiliated with the universities ofWyomingandSouthern Illinoisto improve the quality of education. This helped AIT to upgrade its physical infrastructure as well bringing opportunities to students and teachers to avail scholarship and fellowship inUnited States. Progressively, AIT became an exemplary model of modern technical schooling inAfghanistanwith standard classrooms, dormitories and auditorium, well equipped technical training and modern laboratories.

After invasion byUSSRin 1979, US Cooperation and support to AIT was gradually withdrawn and AIT was closed down eventually until 1993. Unfortunately during the civil war of 1992 to 1996, district 4 where this institute is located became the frontline of battles leading to enormous damage to the institute. Many parts of the building was destroyed, tools and equipment were either stolen or left behind spoiled and useless. Gradually, AIT which used to be a platform of opportunities for hundreds of Afghan youth, both boys and girls, portrayed miserable war ruins.

The Government of Afghanistan commencing renovation of building, labs and workshops, AIT was reopened in 2002 and admitted students in seven departments. (Architecture, Building Constructions, Machine tools technology, Auto repairing, sheet metal work, Electricity and Computer Science) with minimum educational facilities under Ministry of Education, Government of Afghanistan.
